A Decade of Food Waste Recycling!

Our Cambridgeshire-based state of the art anaerobic digestion (AD) facility is turning 10 years old this month. A decade after it first opened its doors, the team at Local Generation are celebrating in style!

Our Cambridgeshire-based state of the art anaerobic digestion (AD) facility is turning 10 years old this month. A decade after it first opened its doors, the team at Local Generation are celebrating in style!

Set in 7 acres of land, our Cambridgeshire facility has the capacity to process 120,000 tonnes of food waste and generates up to 5MWe of electricity and biogas. We transform food and beverage waste into green energy through the process of anaerobic digestion.

In 2020 as a group, we recycled over 400,000 tonnes of food waste, enough to fill the Albert Hall 4 times over, we produced enough biofertiliser by-product from our AD process to cover the equivalent of 8,000 football pitches!

As Local Generation turns ten, we thought we’d look back at some of the interesting and bizarre things that have come through our doors in that time and speak to some of the people that keep the wheels turning on one of our business plants across the group!

Introducing…

Carl Thompson – Plant Manager

Carl has worked for Local Generation now for 8 years and over that time has held a few interesting roles with us. He started as a maintenance engineer, lead engineer and is now plant manager for Local Generation.

During his time with us, Carl has seen several ‘interesting’ items come through the doors for recycling and some have been more memorable than others!

“I love working here, no two days are the same and best of all I have a great team!”

Fun fact: Carl’s favourite piece of kit is the Blackline Gas Monitors!

Joe Ayres - Maintenance Engineer

Joe started working for the group in 2013 as an apprentice after completing his AS-Levels, following a year at college Joe decided he wanted to move into engineering. During his time with us he completed a three-year work-based advanced diploma, a level 3 BTEC and a level 4 HNC, which the BioteCH4 group funded on his behalf.

“It’s great to be part of a growing business, it’s changing all the time and no one day is the same as the other, which is one of the reasons I love working here.”

We’re also thrilled to have just announced that Joe has secured the role of Plant Manager at Thornfield and we wish him every success!

Fun fact: Joe’s favourite piece of kits is the hot water recirculation pump!

Kerry Penaluna - Laboratory Technician

Kerry has worked for Local Generation for over seven and a half years now, she works in our lab carrying our daily testing and reporting and plays an integral role within the team. While Kerry has been with the team her greatest achievement is reaching her Level 2 NVQ - Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (QCF).

We also have it on good authority that Kerry is a great baker as she provided all the cakes for our recent birthday celebrations!

Fun fact: The strangest thing Kerry has had to test during her time with Local Generation is a tractor trailer full of cow manure!

Andy Morgan – Process Operator

Andy has worked for Local Generation now for 9 years and is one of our process operators on site.

Andy, as with all the team are looking forward to the installation of their 3rd digester being finished and increasing the capacity of the plant as a result. We’re hoping this will be up and running during late November!

Fun fact: During his time with us Andy has seen lots of random things come through with the food waste we take in for recycling, but his most memorable must be a bowling ball!

While we’ve spoken to a few key people about their time with Local Generation and their role within the business, we can’t let the tenth birthday pass without a mention to everyone else who keeps the plant ticking over, adds to the great team atmosphere and is either based there or has started their career at the Local Generation plant – there are too many to mention, but here are a few name drops…

Victoria Peat – our Chief Operating Officer started at Local Generation 4 years ago as Human Resources Assistant and has moved into her new role for BioteCH4 - now responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the groups operational policies, processes, and goals. Her overall aim is to drive sustainable growth for the business

Lee Dobinson – the Chief Commercial Officer for the BioteCH4 group is also based at Local Generation and has been with the group now for over 9 years now. Lee is responsible for developing our client base and our public sector contracts as well as ensuring our existing customers are well maintained.

Russ Baker – started working at Local Generation in the very early stages of the plant’s development as Engineer Manager, then onto Plant Manager of Local Generation & Hemswell Biogas and progressed up to his current position of Chief Technical Officer for the BioteCH4 group.

Chris Malia – started as a Process Operator, has worked in transport, bookings and as a Commercial Manager before securing his current role as Sales Manager for the group.

Linzi Whiting – Has had a variety of roles whilst working at the Local Generation site, she is our Group Planning Manager working closely with our commercial team dealing with the input and output of waste and strives to make sure waste management paperwork compliance is met. It’s safe to say we’d be lost without her!

Duncan Jones – Not only does he bring a huge personality to Local Generation, but also an abundance of experience. Duncan is Commercial Manager for Local Generation and is the link between us and our customers in the East Midlands area.

Adam Carter – is our Group Projects Manager and has his work cut out with all the new and exciting work we have on the cards. It’s safe to say Adam rarely enjoys a hot drink, he’s so busy!

Alan Fouracres - works closely with the sites’ management teams, ensuring compliance to all relevant legislation whilst continually driving continuous improvements.

We could go on, but for now we’d just like to thank everyone who keeps not just our Local Generation plant working to the standards it is, but everyone across each of our group locations – thank you!
